The experience of a lifetime!

I knew little about what was coming when I signed up for USASIP. What I did know was that I wanted to receive qualified work experience before my graduation, take some time off from school and to travel the US. Working as an intern at Monte Stott & Associates Inc. turned out to be different and better than expected, although my expectations were very high.

Monte and his five employees perform engineering consultancy projects all around the Bay Area (mostly in San Francisco, Oakland and Berkeley). On a typical day at work, Monte and I drive around to different project sites and meet homeowners, brokers, contractors, architects, and laborers. We discuss the clients’ needs of service, examine crawl spaces, measure settlements, and investigate work sites. Back at the office, I help out with hand or CAD drawings, calculations, contracts and proposals while I also gather information on building materials, details, methods, solutions, and regulations. As time goes by, I continue to learn more and try to contribute as much as I can to the team. Monte and my colleges are friendly, humorous, smart, and helpful which makes every day pleasant, educative and fun. I will remember my time here with joy, and definitely come back some day.

Our vision

__ Since the year 1963, the program has given students at Chalmers the valuable experience of an internship in both the United States and Canada. The purpose of the program is to give students genuine work experience within their specific field of education and to create cultural understanding between the United States and the Scandinavian countries. The program has proved to be very successful in satisfying both students and hosting companies and it has therefore obtained a good reputation. AB Volvo, Ericsson and AstraZeneca are a few examples of companies that we have collaborated with.

Volvo is one of the world’s leading suppliers of vehicles for the commercial transport industry. We are today about 100 000 colleagues worldwide who each day work to develop and produce services and products of the highest quality. Whether you are based in Sweden, India, Brasil or the US knowledge and understanding of other cultures is vital and we gladly welcome knowledgeable, curious and passionate technicians and engineers with an international background to our company.

Trainee programs in particular has for many of our coworkers at Volvo been the first contact with life outside their home countries. I am hoping that the participants of the USA Summer Internship Program 2012 will bring both exciting and useful knowledge with them as they return home to Sweden.

From my own experience I know how developing it is to live and work abroad and what great use one has of these experiences for the rest of one’s professional life. For me and the Volvo Group it is therefore natural to support the work of the USA Summer Internship Program 2012.
