Getinge Sourcing LLC is a part of the Swedish concern Getinge and develops and builds sterilizers for different costumer within the medical field. My supervisor for the summer, Scott Lesnick is the facilities manager of the company, so he had a lot of work concerning the facilities on the site. I started up easy the first two weeks with updating material safety data sheets for the chemicals in the plant and fire escape routes in the site, before starting what I would spend the rest of my summer with. This was updating old drawings of HVAC, plumbing, the fire protection system and evacuation plan for the site, compiling all into one document. This was done in AutoCAD and included a lot of verifying, since the building had changed since the original
drawings were made, some of them dating from the middle of the 50’s. It made me realize just how much modern computers and software makes engineering both a faster and more enjoyable line of work. This project made me feel more confident in CAD environment, gave a feeling of how a
medium‐size company is built up organizationally and other skills and knowledge that will be very useful in the future.

I spent my summer in St. Paul, Minnesota, working at a district heating facility. The company of District Energy St. Paul is using
Swedish technology to make the city of St. Paul more environmentally friendly and energy efficient. Here, I had the possibility to combine my bachelor degree in chemical engineering with my master studies in environmental energy issues. My work at District Energy was on a wide basis, as I was getting
involved with both customers, employees at the plant and in distribution, and also external contacts at the city of St. Paul and different vendors. This was very interesting as it helped me to perceive the whole process of running an industry. Working in the US was an interesting experience, both with respect to my assignment at work and cultural aspects.

At Volvo Arizona Proving Ground the main purpose is to test vehicles in the heat. My time at Volvo involved a lot of computer aided work but also being outside measuring and testing the vehicles in the heat. Some parts of my work are confidential but beside that I had two projects that I was responsible for during my time at Volvo.

The first project was to study the difference in fuel consumption for different octane levels; this involved a lot of contact with the test drivers and was of great interest for Volvo. The second project was to do a research of the hybrid market in USA and to present this in a report. Beside those two projects I took part in the daily work together with the engineers responsible for the test procedures. This work was very interesting because I did really get the opportunity to see what it is like to be a testing engineer at Volvo.
